A new group, the National Unity Forum, has emerged yesterday at the National Conference under the leadership of former deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu.

Mantu, a key figure in former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third term agenda, is a delegate from North central zone.

Daily Trust yesterday saw a letter personally signed by Mantu, inviting some selected delegates to the inaugural meeting of the group scheduled for last night in Abuja.

“National Confab delegates from the 6 geo-political zones met on the 27 of March, 2014 and muted the idea of forming a group of like-minded delegates from the six-geopolitical zones under the name of National Unity Forum.

“As you know, it is global practice for like-minds to form interest blocks in such national conferences,” he said in the letter.

Mantu said the selected delegates would receive “further briefing” at the meeting.

A Daily Trust reporter also saw a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Borno State distributing the letters to some delegates during the plenary session.
