Lawmaker demands N1.5bn compensation from Kano coy over blackout
A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Yusuf Shittu Galambi, has demanded N1.5 billion compensation from the Kano Electricity Distribution Company(KEDCO) over six months power outage in his constituency.
Galambi, who is also a member of the House Representatives Committee on Power, lamented that since the takeover of the Kano zone of the defunct PHCN by KEDCO, the people of his constituency in Jigawa State, have been cut off from the national grid.
Speaking to our correspondent shortly after addressing people of his constituency at Kila area of Gwaram Local Government Area, he said he has finalised arrangements with his lawyers to institute legal action against the power company.
“Before the privatisation processes were completed, the people of my constituency were enjoying power supply but since the takeover by this company, we have been in darkness. As a representative of the people, I have no other option than to go to court. My people have lost over 1.5 billion to the blackout because they rely only on PHCN for power supply,” he said.
He added: “It was wind that damaged the 33kv line supplying power to the people of my constituency. At first it was only five concrete poles and 500 meters cable that were affected but because of the lackadaisical attitude of the company towards the repair, it has increased to about 10,000 metres. If other companies behave like this, then I’m afraid to say that the privatisation of the PHCN will be a failure”.
He said they have on several occasions reported the issue to the Dutse business unit of the company but that no action was taken.
