Man, 30, beheads father, eats up his neck

A 30 year-old man, Nwode Chukwudi Awam, is to appear in court in Ebonyi State today for beheading his father, 56 year-old Michael Awam, and devouring his neck at Egwudinagu Obegu village in Ebonyi LGA of Ebonyi State, police said yesterday.

The motive for the act is yet unclear, but police spokesman ASP Chris Anyanwu said the man is still undergoing interrogation and the machete and pestle used in the killing were recovered from the scene while the body has since been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

ASP Anyanwu said when the police went for him, Chukwudi was waving the machete, threatening to kill anyone who got close to him, but he was later overpowered and arrested.

“But the shock of this incident is that he was seen eating part of the head. So when you look at the exhibit, the head doesn’t have the neck even though he did the beheading from the base of the shoulder, you won’t see the part of the body that is supposed to be the neck, he ate it up. We can say it is not unconnected with rituals because it does appear that he may have been asked to do such a thing but as I said, he is still undergoing investigation and if he yields we will discover the real reason. So far, he has not given a clear reason behind the act,” Anyanwu said.

Chukwudi who was seen intermittently smiling and looking calm told newsmen that he carried out the act after he heard a voice which told him to go to his village and kill his father. His Uncle, Mr. Joseph Nwite, said Chuckwudi had been away from home for over six years.

“He just came back from Imo State and killed his father. He didn’t say what wrong his father did to him, he lived in Imo for more than five years and has not been coming home, nobody was around when he came back”, Nwite said.
