Windstorm ravages Benue towns

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Hope Abah, Makurdi

Heavy winds Wednesday night swept across some towns in Benue State, causing major damage to houses and electrical installations. The wind which heralded a rainfall that lasted for two hours started about 9:20pm.

Daily Trust gathered that Otukpo, Makurdi and some other places were badly affected as the storm uprooted trees and pulled off roofs.

The development poised a tough challenge for PHCN workers and the sanitation agency yesterday as they struggled to remove fallen electric poles and dirt which blocked roads and drainages, especially in Makurdi. A resident, Luke Tor, whose house was affected, lamented the extent of destruction, pleading with God not to let such ever happen again. “I’m really going to spend money that I never budgeted for this purpose. My entire roof was blown off by the wind and my property was destroyed,” he said. Many other residents of the capital city and Otukpo narrated similar experiences.
