Shettima: No faction in Borno APC

Daily Trust - - INSIDE POLITICS - From Hamza Idris, Maiduguri

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, on Wednesday, declared that there is no faction in the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor who spoke against the backdrop of alleged threats by a group loyal to the former governor of the state, Ali Modu Sherriff, to form a faction of the party in the state called for a rancor-free ward, local government and state congresses.

The governor made the comment at a stakeholders meeting of the APC at the multipurpose hall of the Government House in Maiduguri which was attended by his deputy, Zanna Umar Umar Mustapha, Senator Ali Ndume, five members of the House of Representatives from the state, state House of Assembly members, some commissioners, special advisers and party leaders.

Former Governor Sheriff and some elected and appointed politicians, said to be loyal to him were absent at the meeting which was meant to strategize ahead of the congresses.

The development has heightened fears of parallel congresses, outright boycott or anti party posturing by the Ali Modu Sheriff led group.

But speaking at the event, Shettima said APC is one and will come out stronger after the congress.

“In the first place, I want to state that there is no faction in the APC in Borno but most importantly, even if there are issues in certain quarters, we have to allow the spirit of forgiveness to prevail for our collective benefit,” the governor said.

He said leadership positions at all levels would be occupied through elections and not selections in order to allow members prove their mettle and popularity.

“This is the time for us to form an all inclusive structures at all levels. There is nothing like Kashim Shettima Group or former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff Group. The APC is for all, no segment of the society will be neglected in the provision of social amenities,” Shettima said.

Deputy Governor Zanna Mustapha urged party members and all citizens in the state to be patient and remain focused while Senator Ndume commended the leadership qualities of Governor Shettima and stressed the need for all to support him.
