No vaccines for Ebola, Dengue diseases - FG

Daily Trust - - NEWS - By Ruby Leo

Minister of Health Professor Christian Onyebuchi Chukwu at the weekend said that the deadly Ebola virus that has killed scores of people in some West African countries and the Dengue fever have not got any known vaccines yet.

One case of dengue fever has been confirmed in Nigeria by the federal government.

Minister of Information Mr. Labaran Maku had last week stated that Nigeria was taking all precautionary measures “including getting the vaccines and medicines” required to tackle Ebola and dengue outbreak in Nigeria.

He said this while addressing state house correspondents after the weekly federal executive council meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Prof Chukwu explained that worldwide, there was no vaccine for treating either Ebola or dengue infections. He said: “There is no case of Ebola in Nigeria; and we are putting things in place because it is not something you stay and say it will not come.

“So, it is possible someone can visit a place and come back with a disease; it is possible. But, we’ve taken time to do surveillance. We are strengthening everything. So, if we pick a case, we quickly quarantine so that it doesn’t spread to others.”
