Traders, manager trade words over Garki market fire incident
Traders have called on the Garki market management to provide answers to the fire incident that occurred in the market in the early hours of Saturday, March 29, 2014.
Speaking to journalists yesterday during an inspection and commiseration visit by the top management of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the market, the chairman of Garki Model Market Association (GAMMA), Mr Friday Ozochi, called on the Abuja Market Managers Limited (AMML) to tell the traders what happened to over 60 shops that were razed during the incident.
Ozochi said, “We’re still surprised at what happened on Saturday morning. They should come out and explain what actually transpired because we pay our service charge, which covers for both fire and other services within the market.”
Addressing the FEMA delegation led by the Director-General, Alhaji Abbas Gunmi, the Garki Model Market Manager, Mr Ibrahim Yahaya-Joe, said the fire originated from the frozen food section but was effectively contained by men of the Fire Service.
In his remarks, the FEMA helmsman, commiserated with the management and traders for the incident, reiterating the FCT minister’s commitment to the preservation of life and property of residents.
He also called on the market managers to collaborate with the agency to ensure that the stalls within all FCT markets are insured.
