Facts about the ribs

The

ribs are the thin, flat­tish bones that curve around the chest.

To­gether, the rib bones are called the rib cage which pro­tects vi­tal or­gans like the kid­ney, liver, heart, stomach, lung, spleen e.t.c.

The gaps be­tween the ribs are called in­ter­costal spa­ces and they con­tain thin sheets of mus­cle which con­tract and re­lax the chest dur­ing breath­ing.

Ev­ery hu­man has 12 pairs of ribs; seven pairs of true ribs, three pairs of false ribs and two pairs of float­ing ribs.
