Delegates’ allowances to be made public today
The allowances of the 492 delegates to the National Conference would be announced today at the plenary, the chairman of the conference Justice Idris Kutigi has said.
Kutigi was responding to a request by a delegate from Sokoto, Professor Aisha, who observed yesterday at the end of the plenary session that the media is awashed with stories of how much delegates receive as allowance.
“Mr Chairman, there are various reports in the media suggesting that delegates are paid N12 million, some said N10 million, others said N4 million per month and so on,” she said.
She requested the national secretariat to make public the amount of allowance each delegate is entitled daily “for the benefit of the media.”
Deputy chairman Professor Bolaji Akniyemi, who was guiding the plenary handed over the microphone to the chairman.
Kutigi explained that the Assistant Secretary on Finance and Administration, Professor Mahmood Yakubu was not around. He said Yakubu, who is in charge of finances was not on seat, but he would make the announcement tomorrow when the plenary reconvenes.
Daily Trust reported about two weeks ago that delegates received N1.46million each as allowance for two weeks.
This means that delegates would receive N8.8million at the end of their three months assignment. These monies are monetized allowances for accommodation, transport and sittings.
The delegates are being served coffee and lunch during plenary sessions for the four days they sit in a week.
