Rainstorm destroys houses in Lagos
An early morning rainstorm yesterday destroyed at least 12 houses at the EbuteMetta area of Lagos Mainland LGA.
Property worth millions of naira were said to have been destroyed while scores of people were rendered homeless as the rainstorm was active for about one hour. The houses worst hit are on Ondo Street, Abeokuta, Tapa, Osholake and Bola Streets, all within Ebute -Metta West.
When our correspondent visited the area, it was observed that the roofs of 12 buildings were blown-off. A blownoff roof fell on some vehicles parked inside the Obadare Church at Olokodana but no one was hurt.
The rainstorm also damaged more than 10 vehicles at Osholake, Ondo, Abeokuta and Tapa Streets. Displaced residents feared fallen electricity cables detached from electric poles which littered streets in the area. An affected resident, Mr. Dotun Alakija, who lives on Ondo Street, told our correspondent that he and his family were preparing for church service when the storm started.
“It caught us by surprise. We didn’t expect it and within seconds the rooftop of the house was blown off. Suddenly the sky went dark and wind started blowing and it rained heavily,” he said. He and other affected residents urged the state government to come to their aid.
