Pen­sion­ers threaten protest

The Na­tional Union of Pen­sion­ers, All Sec­toral Units (ASU), has is­sued a dead­line of July 1 to the federal govern­ment to im­ple­ment the 33.4 per cent pen­sion in­crease or risk a na­tion­wide protest.

The ul­ti­ma­tum which was is­sued in a com­mu­niqué af­ter the gen­eral meet­ing of ASU held at the weekend was jointly signed by the na­tional chair­man, Com­rade Rasaki Ope and na­tional sec­re­tary, Com­rade Franklin Erinle.

The com­mu­nique said fail­ure of the federal govern­ment to meet its de­mands would re­sult in a mass protest by all pen­sion­ers.

“We con­demn the dis­par­i­ties in pay­ment of pen­sions na­tion­wide and call on the federal govern­ment to har­mo­nize same with­out de­lay,” the group said.
