Ministry trains cooperatives on warehousing

Daily Trust - - BUSINESS - By Olayemi R. Ibrahim

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has commenced training of cooperatives members on how to store farm produce.

The Director of Cooperatives Dr. Dickson Okoro who made this known in Abuja, said the system would provide opportunity for farmers to dispose of their produce profitably.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is already training cooperatives, particularly the apex ones, and we are sitting on the committee coordinating it to ensure its success. “Farmers have to know how to dispose of their produce profitably and the warehouse receipt system provides opportunity for them to do so,” he said.

Okoro said they have identified locations that were able and willing to receive their produce and also issue receipts that are of value with the produce they are sending to the stores.

He also said the receipt could also allow the farmers to access loans from designated banks to fund their business.

Okoro said that the Federal Government also intended to make the system to be practiced by both the private and public sectors to allow for healthy competition.

“This system will not be monopolised by any individual, what we need is a healthy competition so that the farmers will have more chances to benefit from the services,” he said.
