At­tack­ers kill 10, burn 40 houses in Taraba

Ten people were killed and many oth­ers were in­jured when sus­pected herds­men at­tacked Nwokyo vil­lage in Wukari LGA of Taraba State yes­ter­day, res­i­dents said.

Ac­cord­ing to the res­i­dents, the at­tack­ers who were in mil­i­tary uni­forms also burned 40 houses in­clud­ing wor­ship places and a health cen­tre built un­der the Mil­len­nium De­vel­op­ment Goals (MDGs) pro­gramme.

Our cor­re­spon­dent gath­ered that some women and chil­dren who had ear­lier gone to the MDG hospi­tal for med­i­cal at­ten­tion were burnt to death with the hospi­tal. Taraba po­lice spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji, said seven per­sons were killed and 40 thatched houses were burnt. Ac­cord­ing to him, the at­tack­ers are sus­pected to be Fu­lani herds­men from neigh­bour­ing Plateau State who crossed the River Benue to at­tack the vil­lage.

He said calm has re­turned to the area now as se­cu­rity per­son­nel have been drafted to main­tain or­der, adding that no ar­rest has so far been made. For­mer ACN gu­ber­na­to­rial can­di­date in Taraba State, Joel Ikenya, in a re­ac­tion urged the state govern­ment to step up se­cu­rity in the area to check the at­tacks which have led to loss of many lives in re­cent times.
