Attackers kill 10, burn 40 houses in Taraba
Ten people were killed and many others were injured when suspected herdsmen attacked Nwokyo village in Wukari LGA of Taraba State yesterday, residents said.
According to the residents, the attackers who were in military uniforms also burned 40 houses including worship places and a health centre built under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) programme.
Our correspondent gathered that some women and children who had earlier gone to the MDG hospital for medical attention were burnt to death with the hospital. Taraba police spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji, said seven persons were killed and 40 thatched houses were burnt. According to him, the attackers are suspected to be Fulani herdsmen from neighbouring Plateau State who crossed the River Benue to attack the village.
He said calm has returned to the area now as security personnel have been drafted to maintain order, adding that no arrest has so far been made. Former ACN gubernatorial candidate in Taraba State, Joel Ikenya, in a reaction urged the state government to step up security in the area to check the attacks which have led to loss of many lives in recent times.
