Lagos residents get free goitre surgeries
Forty eight residents of Badagry, Lagos Tuesaday benefited from a free goitre surgery programme instituted by Governor Babatunde Fashola.
Flagging -off the programme yesterday at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Fashola assured that his administration would sponsor the surgeries of all infected Badagry residents. He said henceforth, the state government would commence regular screening and surgery of residents suffering from the disease.
He said investigations by officials of the Ministry of Health revealed that some of the residents had been suffering from the disease for more than two decades. The governor said that apart from carrying out the free surgery, experts have also been deployed to the community to investigate the likely cause of the disease in order to find a lasting solution to the problem.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, urged beneficiaries to inform their friends or relatives suffering from the disease to come for surgery. The special adviser to the governor on public health, Dr Yewande Adeshina, said goitre is easier treated at an early stage, saying the operation might not be necessary for those who report their cases on time. Dr Adehina said the abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland in the neck resulting from iodine deficiency could be corrected if infected persons reduce intake of foods like cassava.
