The Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa yesterday said that the Diaspora holds the key to the transformation of the country’s development. Acting Director-General of the directorate, Mr Shuaibu Suleiman, stated this during a symposium titled ‘The Diaspora: Challenges, opportunities and strategies for effective national absorption’ in Abuja.
He said over 250,000 consultant medical doctors from Nigeria live and works in the United States of America, adding that it is expedient for Africa to take full advantage of the enormous top class skills, resource and experience of its Diaspora.
Suleiman said the symposium will give voice to the Diaspora to share experiences, best practices and chart a practical framework for effective engagement in Nigeria and the African community.
Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former United Nations under secretary, presented a paper titled ‘The role of the Diaspora in Africa’s Development’ at the event.
