Africa’s pol­icy mak­ers, sci­en­tists tasked on food se­cu­rity

Deputy Min­is­ter of Agri­cul­ture, Ghana, Dr Al­has­san Yakubu, has ad­vised sci­en­tists and pol­icy mak­ers in Africa to work to­gether in or­der to en­sure food se­cu­rity on the con­ti­nent.

He gave the ad­vice dur­ing the African Agri­cul­tural Tech­nol­ogy Foun­da­tion’s an­nual re­view and plan­ning meet­ing on the Pod Borer Re­sis­tant (PBR) Cow­pea project in Ghana. He said there is need to elim­i­nate the dif­fer­ences be­tween politi­cians and sci­en­tists.

Field­ing ques­tions from news­men, Project Man­ager of the PBR Cow­pea Project, Dr Prince Ad­dae said one of the goals of the project which is be­ing im­ple­mented in Nigeria, Ghana and Burk­ina-Faso is to in­tro­duce BT trait into farm­ers va­ri­eties af­ter tri­als have shown proof of the con­cept in con­trol­ling maruca, a pest that in­fests cow­pea. Also speak­ing, the Man­ag­ing Di­rec­tor, Maina Seeds Limited based in Kano, said the PBR cow­pea will help al­le­vi­ate the prob­lems farm­ers face with maruca, boost cow­pea pro­duc­tion and seed com­pa­nies in Africa.
