Min­istry, MDGs give 90 women starter packs for aqua­cul­ture and poul­try

The 90 Women who have been trained by the min­istry of agri­cul­ture in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the mil­len­nium De­vel­op­ment Goal (MDGs) and Grow­ing-Girls and Women in Nigeria Or­gan­i­sa­tion have re­ceived starter packs for aqua­cul­ture and poul­try.

Com­mis­sion­ing the starter packs in Abuja, yes­ter­day, Min­is­ter for State Agri­cul­ture and Ru­ral De­vel­op­ment Mrs As­abe Ahmed, said women were the back­bone of Nige­rian agri­cul­ture, call­ing for their em­pow­er­ment.

In her key­note ad­dress, the per­ma­nent sec­re­tary of the min­istry, Mrs. Ibukun Odu­sote, ex­pressed her de­light with the pro­gramme, adding that it would help the ben­e­fi­cia­ries who are mainly staff of the min­istry even af­ter their re­tire­ment.

In her ad­dress, the min­istry’s Deputy Di­rec­tor, Gen­der and Youth, Ha­jiya Karima Ibrahim Ba­bangida, said the pro­gramme was geared to­wards em­pow­er­ing women of the min­istry who have re­ceived train­ing in aqua­cul­ture and poul­try to en­gage them mean­ing­fully in agri­cul­ture.

45 women who trained in aqua­cul­ture were given 500 ju­ve­nile, one weigh­ing scale, 5 bags of fish feed, one wa­ter test kit among oth­ers.

Forty-five oth­ers trained in poul­try were given 200 day-old broil­ers, five bags of starter feeds, feeder among oth­ers.

The ben­e­fi­cia­ries ex­pressed their grat­i­tude to the min­istry and the MDGs for the ges­ture, say­ing that it will go a long way in em­pow­er­ing them and their fam­i­lies.
