NITEL privatisation: FG says will give priority to workers
The federal government has said that workers of the defunct Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL) would be given priority in the eventual sale of the entity to the private sector.
Labor Adviser to the Presidential Task Force on Power, Comrade Salisu Mohammed, disclosed this in a paper ,’’Overview of Labor in the Era of Privatization Programme’’, presented at a two-day capacity building programme for members of Labor Writers Association of Nigeria(LAWAN),in Ibadan, Oyo state.
Mohammed said the priority to be given to the workers is hinged on government’s belief that that they are critical stakeholders in NITEL who should not be left out in all the facets of the entity.
The House of Representatives had recently directed the National Council Privatization to compel the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to halt the liquidation of the Nigerian Telecommunication Limited and its subsidiary, Mobile Telecommunications Limited.
Mohammed said the government would soon embark on the train of privatizing the NITEL again after the knotty issues surrounding its previous sale might have been addressed.
