NI­TEL pri­vati­sa­tion: FG says will give pri­or­ity to work­ers

The federal govern­ment has said that work­ers of the de­funct Nige­rian Telecommunication Limited (NI­TEL) would be given pri­or­ity in the even­tual sale of the en­tity to the pri­vate sec­tor.

La­bor Ad­viser to the Pres­i­den­tial Task Force on Power, Com­rade Sal­isu Mo­hammed, dis­closed this in a paper ,’’Over­view of La­bor in the Era of Pri­va­ti­za­tion Pro­gramme’’, pre­sented at a two-day ca­pac­ity build­ing pro­gramme for mem­bers of La­bor Writ­ers As­so­ci­a­tion of Nigeria(LAWAN),in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Mo­hammed said the pri­or­ity to be given to the work­ers is hinged on govern­ment’s be­lief that that they are crit­i­cal stake­hold­ers in NI­TEL who should not be left out in all the facets of the en­tity.

The House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives had re­cently di­rected the Na­tional Coun­cil Pri­va­ti­za­tion to com­pel the Bureau of Pub­lic En­ter­prises (BPE) to halt the liq­ui­da­tion of the Nige­rian Telecommunication Limited and its sub­sidiary, Mo­bile Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions Limited.

Mo­hammed said the govern­ment would soon em­bark on the train of pri­va­tiz­ing the NI­TEL again af­ter the knotty is­sues sur­round­ing its pre­vi­ous sale might have been ad­dressed.
