Mechanic bags 5 months imprisonment for stealing welding machine
A Kado Upper Area Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced a 34-year-old mechanic, David Daniel, to five months imprisonment for stealing a welding machine.
The judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced Daniel after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of joint act and theft.
Sadiq, however, gave the convict, who lives in Kpama Village in Abuja, an option of N5,000 fine.
The police prosecutor, Sgt. Simon Ibrahim, had told the court that Emmanuel Ihenazue of Durumi area of Abuja, lodged a report against the accused at the Utako Police Station on April 12.
Ibrahim said that the accused and another man, who was at large, went into the complainant’s workshop and stole a welding machine valued at N45,000.
He said that during police investigation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime.
He told the court that the offence contravened the Penal Code.
In the judgement, Sadiq also ordered that the convict should pay N45,000 as compensation to the owner of the machine.
He said that the sentence was meant to deter those who might want to engage in stealing and other criminal acts. ( NAN)
