Security agents stop burning of suspected ritualists’ den in Ogun

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Kehinde Akinyemi, Abeokuta

Men of the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Ogun State Vigilance Service Organization (VSO) yesterday prevented the burning down of a building, which was rumoured to be a ritualists den in Ijaiye area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the house, a two story building located inside Agbole Ogun in Ijaiye community was attacked by youths, who stormed the building following reports on the presence of human parts in the building.

Our correspondent reports that the development caused a gridlock along the IjaiyeOke Ejigbo-Ake road.

But, the prompt intervention of policemen from the state Special Crime Unit, the Adatan police station, the state VSO and the special unit of the NSCDC, brought the situation under control, Daily Trust learnt.

The state Public Relations Officer of the VSO, Soji Ganzallo, said: “The rumour came from nowhere and before long, there were distress calls from all our units at Ijaiye area. When we got here we spoke to the Balogun of Ijaye, who equally received a similar distress call.”

Ganzallo added: “When we got here, youths were throwing stones at the building shattering the windows, so we decided to invite some youth leaders in the community and we all searched the rooms from the first floor to the last and found nothing.”

The Balogun Ijaiye, Alhaji Chief Balogun Alemo, confirmed that the intervention of security personnel prevented the burning of the house.

“I do not know where the rumour came from, but it is very bad and we are going to investigate it. The owner of the building lives outside Abeokuta and most of the other tenants were not around. The only female occupant, who identified herself as Tolu, said she was doing some house chores when she noticed people around the compound,” Alemo said.
