Panic in Benue over fleeing robbers
There was panic yesterday morning in Daudu in Guma Local Government Area, near Makurdi, when suspected armed robbers said to be fleeing from Nasarawa State engaged police in a gun battle.
Witnesses said the residents, on sighting the robbers scampered for safety as they thought it was another clash between farmers and herdsmen.
Police spokesman, Daniel Ezeala, while commenting on the matter said it had nothing to do with farmers/ herders crisis, but that five suspected robbers in a car heading towards Makurdi from Lafia was accosted at a stop and search point.
He said when the suspects were stopped by the police, they jumped out of the car and ran into the bush while shooting sporadically.
Ezeala added that the police apprehended two of the suspects and recovered three AK47 riffles from them.
He said police are still on the trail of fleeing members of the gang and urged people of the area to go about their lawful businesses. Our correspondent reports that the incident caused a traffic gridlock in the area.
