Panic in Benue over flee­ing rob­bers

There was panic yes­ter­day morn­ing in Daudu in Guma Lo­cal Govern­ment Area, near Makurdi, when sus­pected armed rob­bers said to be flee­ing from Nasarawa State en­gaged po­lice in a gun bat­tle.

Wit­nesses said the res­i­dents, on sight­ing the rob­bers scam­pered for safety as they thought it was an­other clash be­tween farm­ers and herds­men.

Po­lice spokesman, Daniel Ezeala, while com­ment­ing on the mat­ter said it had noth­ing to do with farm­ers/ herders cri­sis, but that five sus­pected rob­bers in a car head­ing to­wards Makurdi from Lafia was ac­costed at a stop and search point.

He said when the sus­pects were stopped by the po­lice, they jumped out of the car and ran into the bush while shoot­ing spo­rad­i­cally.

Ezeala added that the po­lice ap­pre­hended two of the sus­pects and re­cov­ered three AK47 rif­fles from them.

He said po­lice are still on the trail of flee­ing mem­bers of the gang and urged people of the area to go about their law­ful businesses. Our cor­re­spon­dent re­ports that the in­ci­dent caused a traf­fic grid­lock in the area.
