ACF seeks probe of Nyako’s claims
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Monday expressed concerns over by a letter by Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako in which he accused the federal government of incompetence in tackling insurgency.
The governor, in a letter dated April 16, 2014, to his colleagues accused the federal government of genocide against northerners. He alleged that the government’s failure to arrest “the mindless slaughter and indiscriminate bloodletting by the Boko Haram insurgents and other terrorist groups is a clear and systematic plot to destroy the northern population for partisan political advantage”.
National Publicity Secretary of the forum, Mohammed Ibrahim, said: “ACF calls on the federal government to urgently investigate the allegations made by Governor Nyako, as it concerns the support being enjoyed by insurgents from people within and outside Nigeria in order to get to the root of this insecurity ravaging the North.”
The forum, which expressed its support for Nyako’s letter, added that it had earlier called on the government to investigate the source of funds, arms and ammunition the insurgents use.
“Therefore, Governor Nyako, being a victim of the calamity that has afflicted the Northern states is only expressing the frustrations of victims,” the group said.
It lamented that in spite of the plea to equip security forces to appropriately tackle insurgency, government has not done much.
“The measures employed by government, including a state of emergency have not yielded the desired result, hence the incessant attacks and kidnapping of innocent people by insurgents,” the group added.
