Court remands man accused of rape attempt
An Abuja Upper Area Court, sitting at Jiwa, Tuesday, remanded a man living in Gwagwa town in the Abuja Municipal Area Council for allegedly injuring a 15-year-old girl while attempting to rape her.
The police charged the 27-year-old Emeka Onyem with criminal force and assault, causing hurt and rape attempt, offences that contradict Sections 265, 246 and 95 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor, Lawrence Alu, of the Gwagwa division, informed the court that a woman, who is the guardian of the girl, reported at the police station on April 18 that sometime in March 2014 the accused came to her restaurant during closing hours and confronted the girl, who works in the restaurant.
According to the prosecutor, the accused threatened her with a broken bottle and slapped her severally, while trying to rape her.
“The girl managed to run away but in the process stepped on a piece of broken bottle, which lacerated her foot. The accused later met her and gave her N4,000, telling her to keep the matter secret. But on April 18, complainant came to know about the matter after discovering some wares in her possession while planning to send her to their village for Easter break,’’ the prosecutor told the court.
He said the victim told the complainant that the accused gave her the money she used in buying the items.
When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty and the prosecutor asked for adjournment to enable the police to prove its case.
Judge Muhammad Lawal Munnir ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody till May 27 when the case will come up for hearing.
