Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Usman A. Bello, lokoja

Okene Local Government Council is engulfed in crisis as ten councillors of the council yesterday alleged that their lives are under threat over impeachment of the council leader, Kabiru Momoh Habib.

Addressing journalists in Lokoja, the councillors accused the executive arm of the council of allegedly sponsoring thugs to attack them.

Majority leader of the council, Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the ten councillors, alleged that thugs sent by the council chairman, Saliu Ogembe, invaded the chambers premises shortly after the impeachment last week, attacking everybody in sight.

He said Momoh Habib was impeached last week by ten out of 11 councillors for allegedly approving N10 million loan for the executive and “embarking on acts detrimental to the development of the area”, among others.

The council leader said due process was followed in the impeachment process and the subsequent election of Ahmed Tijani Zubair, councillor representing Orietesu ward, as the new leader.

But responding, chairman of the council, Saliu Ogembe, denied the allegation, saying he is like a father to all councillors.

Ogembe, who said he has been taking care of the needs of the councillors within the limited resources available to the council, added that there was bound to be distrust when expectations are higher that what is available.

He warned that no meaningful development can thrive in an atmosphere of rancour and disunity, calling on the councillors to shun external interference.
