The incident occurred at about 4pm when the staff were coming down after closing from work. They were later rescued few minutes before 5pm by some technicians of construction giants Julius Berger, the company that handles the National Assembly complex maintenance.
Before their rescue, the panicked occupants were seen through the small opening gasping for breath.
It occurred at the House of Representatives wing (old section), popularly referred as “White House” of the legislative complex.
The trapped workers were identified as Femi, who is attached to the House of Representatives committee on capital market, Irene, who is a senior staff with the House committee on Diaspora; Fatai, Aduragba and Muhammed.
The malfunctioned elevator was marked “for Honourable Members only” when the legislators were occupying the offices before they relocated to the New Building after its completion.
Sympathetic staff were heard complaining of the recurring failure of the elevator especially after power outage.
