5 N/As­sem­bly work­ers trapped in el­e­va­tor

Five work­ers of the Na­tional As­sem­bly in­clud­ing a woman were yes­ter­day trapped in one of the el­e­va­tors for al­most an hour af­ter it de­vel­oped fault.

The in­ci­dent oc­curred at about 4pm when the staff were com­ing down af­ter clos­ing from work. They were later res­cued few min­utes be­fore 5pm by some tech­ni­cians of con­struc­tion gi­ants Julius Berger, the com­pany that han­dles the Na­tional As­sem­bly com­plex main­te­nance.

Be­fore their res­cue, the pan­icked oc­cu­pants were seen through the small open­ing gasp­ing for breath.

It oc­curred at the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives wing (old sec­tion), pop­u­larly re­ferred as “White House” of the leg­isla­tive com­plex.

The trapped work­ers were iden­ti­fied as Femi, who is at­tached to the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives com­mit­tee on cap­i­tal mar­ket, Irene, who is a se­nior staff with the House com­mit­tee on Di­as­pora; Fatai, Aduragba and Muhammed.

The mal­func­tioned el­e­va­tor was marked “for Hon­ourable Mem­bers only” when the leg­is­la­tors were oc­cu­py­ing the of­fices be­fore they re­lo­cated to the New Build­ing af­ter its com­ple­tion.

Sym­pa­thetic staff were heard com­plain­ing of the recurring fail­ure of the el­e­va­tor es­pe­cially af­ter power out­age.
