Hospitality can create more jobs if properly harnessed - Duke
Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation Edem Duke has said that the hospitality sector will create millions of jobs in the country if properly harnessed.
He made the remark yesterday at the launching of a book on hospitality titled “Hospitality Management Practices in Nigeria” authored by two directors of Nanet Hotels.
The minister, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Dr. Paul Adaliko, advised stakeholders in the hospitality sub-sector to explore the potentials available which will provide jobs for the youth while contributing to the country’s economy.
He hinted that the sector has been the mainstay of the economies many countries in the world.
Speaking to newsmen at the side of the event, the founder of Nanet Hotels, Mrs. Nancy Akpabio, whose son, Mr. Ini Akpabio, a director with the hotel is also one of the co-authors of the book, commended the effort of the authors on offering an insight into the hospitality industry, thus providing a professional reference point for stakeholders.
“It is a great achievement for me personally, with the help of God and the family, to have nurtured Nanet through all these years. It is indeed a thing of joy for a business to pass through generations and survive,” she said.
She also promised to continue giving her best to clients anytime.
Also speaking, the co-author, Ini Akpabio acknowledged that the hospitality industry in Nigeria must be standardised to global standards which necessitates the creation of an avenue to enlighten the public who are the major stakeholders, as the clients, of the industry.
In her speech a Nigerian Diplomat in South Africa, Amb.Uche Achulu Okeke commended the authors for their contribution to the hospitality industry through the publication.
The chief launcher, Managing Director of Dan Oil and Petrochemicals limited, Alhaji Idris Umar, who was represented by Mr. Godwin Ekpo, commended the authors of the book for their contribution in a sector that lacks publications regarding its practices. He purchased ten copies of the book for N3m.
Dignitaries present at the event include Managing Director, Media Trust Limited, Alhaji Ishaq Ajibola; representatives of Director-General of NIHOTOURS, Alhaji Munzali Dantata, and Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
