Nations should develop within context of their culture – Maitama Sule
Former Nigeria Permanent Representative at the United Nations, (UN) Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule has called for nations to develop within the context of their culture.
He said it was by so-doing that peace, understanding and love would reign.
Sule made the remarks at the weekend in a message to the United Nations through Nigeria Permanent Representative, Ambassador Joy Ogwu at the 2nd convocation ceremony of Baze University, Abuja.
Maitama Sule who is the Dan Masanin Kano noted the world “can never be governed by force, never by fear, even never by power and in the end what governs is the mind and what conquers is the spirit.”
According to him, the purpose of governing the mind and the spirit is justice and fair play and leaders around the world should know that it is justice that can bring about peace.
Justice, according to him, implies giving whoever deserves it irrespective of his/ her religion, ethnicity or position, “as such justice is it that brings about peace and development.”
On challenges in Nigeria, he said the country had potential greatness but had yet to realise it because it was bedeviled with so much problems.
“Today respect for elders and constituted authority is at the lower ebb, institutions are broken down, insecurity in the environment, chaos in politics, immorality in society, corruption in the economy and even lack of creativity in individuals are our challenges,” he lamented.
