Catholic priest prays for stam­pede vic­tims

Priest of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Da­maturu, Yobe State, Rev­erend Fa­ther Joshua Ha­man yesterday led a spe­cial prayer ses­sion for vic­tims of the Hajj stam­pede.

The­p­riest­dur­ingth­eSun­dayMass,saidthere­wasa­need­to­pray­for the­soul­soft­he­vic­tim­sand­speedyre­cov­ery­ofthose­whow­ere­in­jured.

He ex­pressed sad­ness that the in­ci­dent claimed such a high num­ber of wor­shipers, but added, “God Almighty knows best”.

“The death toll keeps ris­ing, but the Almighty God knows best and who are we to ques­tion His will. We are all equal be­fore God and we have to re­spect the re­li­gion of oth­ers and to re­mem­ber fel­low hu­man be­ing at all times whether in mo­ments of trou­ble, sad­ness and joy de­spite re­li­gious dif­fer­ences,” he said. The­p­riestal­so­cau­tionedthep­eo­pleon­theuse­ofthe­so­cial­me­dia. “We should be morally and re­li­giously sound in the us­age of the so­cial media in­clud­ing Face­book, Twit­ter, and Whats App. We should avoid us­ing them neg­a­tively to pro­voke be­liev­ers of other re­li­gions,” he said.

Fa­ther Ha­man also prayed for un­der­stand­ing among ad­her­ents of var­i­ous re­li­gions, par­tic­u­larly in the North-east.
