Baba-Ali wins Independence Day Golf Tournament
After a sizzling performance, Jubril Baba-Ali shot the round of the day to emerge the winner of the Independence Day Golf Tournament over the weekend at IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
The winner posted 68 net to beat the field made up of 250 golfers. His victory ensured he was upgraded to the league of single- digit golfers after his handicap was cut from 10 to 8.
Expressing his joy at the achievement, Baba-Ali said “It is special because I entered the record book as a champion on Nigeria’s Independence Day and it gives one cause to be happy. I hope the win will serve as a genuine ground for change for me and the Nigeria Golf Federation.
Adebanjo Adeleke secured the Division 1 net prize (Handicap 0-12) for men with a score of 72. The 12 handicapper shot 84 gross to beat M. Huzi by one shot, while Oludare Bello finished third, three shots out of the lead.
The men gross title was won by Okey Igweh. The four-handicapper carded a 75 to beat Dipo Sanya by four strokes. Tony Azogu placed third with 81, beating Joe Okojie on countback.
Rachel Danjuma and Nanfe Audu won the ladies Division 1 and 2 silverwares. Danjuma came in with a 75, beating Appiah Yaduma by six shots while Audu held off the challenge of Mirabel Edozie and Jumai Abdulahi courtesy of her 68 net.
The Independence Day Tournament was organised by the Nigeria community to celebrate Nigeria’s 55th anniversary.
Interestingly, beside the Independence Kitty, the tournament featured an international friendly matchplay between IBB Golf Club, Abuja and visiting Achimota Golf Club of Accra over two days.
