Baba-Ali wins In­de­pen­dence Day Golf Tour­na­ment

Af­ter a siz­zling per­for­mance, Jubril Baba-Ali shot the round of the day to emerge the win­ner of the In­de­pen­dence Day Golf Tour­na­ment over the week­end at IBB Golf and Coun­try Club, Abuja.

The win­ner posted 68 net to beat the field made up of 250 golfers. His vic­tory en­sured he was up­graded to the league of sin­gle- digit golfers af­ter his hand­i­cap was cut from 10 to 8.

Ex­press­ing his joy at the achieve­ment, Baba-Ali said “It is spe­cial be­cause I en­tered the record book as a cham­pion on Nige­ria’s In­de­pen­dence Day and it gives one cause to be happy. I hope the win will serve as a gen­uine ground for change for me and the Nige­ria Golf Fed­er­a­tion.

Ade­banjo Adeleke se­cured the Di­vi­sion 1 net prize (Hand­i­cap 0-12) for men with a score of 72. The 12 hand­i­cap­per shot 84 gross to beat M. Huzi by one shot, while Olu­dare Bello fin­ished third, three shots out of the lead.

The men gross ti­tle was won by Okey Ig­weh. The four-hand­i­cap­per carded a 75 to beat Dipo Sanya by four strokes. Tony Azogu placed third with 81, beat­ing Joe Oko­jie on count­back.

Rachel Dan­juma and Nanfe Audu won the ladies Di­vi­sion 1 and 2 sil­ver­wares. Dan­juma came in with a 75, beat­ing Ap­piah Yad­uma by six shots while Audu held off the chal­lenge of Mirabel Edozie and Ju­mai Ab­du­lahi cour­tesy of her 68 net.

The In­de­pen­dence Day Tour­na­ment was or­gan­ised by the Nige­ria com­mu­nity to celebrate Nige­ria’s 55th an­niver­sary.

In­ter­est­ingly, be­side the In­de­pen­dence Kitty, the tour­na­ment fea­tured an in­ter­na­tional friendly match­play be­tween IBB Golf Club, Abuja and vis­it­ing Achi­mota Golf Club of Ac­cra over two days.
