Councillors lock out LG boss over funds

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Vincent Egunyanga, Benin

Councillors in Egor LGA of Edo State yesterday locked out their chairman, Victor Enobakhare, over nondisclosure of actual amount of the bailout fund received from the federal government.

Other reasons for the councillors’ action were their demand to know what accrued to the council’s coffers through Internally Generated Revenue and the actual cost of running the local government and payment of outstanding salaries.

The councillors barricaded the gate and prevented Enobakhare from gaining access into the secretariat.

But the Secretary to the Local Government, Joshua Uwagboe, said only three councillors participated in the protest.

“About three of them said they had some information about the IGR, their salaries and many other issues. They said they wanted the chairman to answer them. We believe that standing in front of the gate was not the right thing. They are lawmakers, if they want any information, the can invite the chairman. I don’t think they invited the chairman and he refused to answer. I believe they were misinformed. There is peace now in the council secretariat,” he said.
