Flood sacks 33 communities in Niger
Residents of 33 communities in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State have been displaced by flood, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.
Member representing Agaie/Lapai federal constituency at the National Assembly, Mohammed Abdulkadir Mahamud and his House of
state Assembly counterpart for Lapai constituency, Adamu Hassan Abugi, told newsmen yesterday that 18 of the affected communities could no longer be accessed as the roads were washed off in the process.
The legislators said the displaced villagers were leaving under deplorable condition in primary schools in Arah and Dere within the local government area.
They said property such as residential buildings, schools, places of worship and farmland were lost to the flood.
At the Dere Primary School, the legislators assured the affected communities of the support of the state government.
“We have spoken to the governor of the degree of devastation caused by the flood and he (governor) has promised to come to our aid with a view to relocating our people upland. And I know that the governor will not disappoint us,” they said.
They called on appropriate authority to speed up the process leading to the full take off of the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) as a panacea to addressing the problem of recurring flooding of the area.
