Man,19,goesto­jail­for steal­ing mo­tor­cy­cle

A 19-year-old man has been sen­tenced to 13 months im­pris­on­ment by an Abuja Mag­is­trate court for steal­ing a mo­tor­cy­cle in Kubwa, Bwari Area Coun­cil of the Fed­eral Cap­i­tal Ter­ri­tory (FCT). Aminu Umar of Jaye, Abuja, was con­victed for joint act and theft, of­fenses con­trary to sec­tions 79 and 287 of the Pe­nal Code.

The po­lice pros­e­cu­tor Oyeyemi told the court that the com­plainant, one Babarabe Ishaku of Phase 2, Site 1, on Septem­ber 20, re­ported at the Kubwa po­lice sta­tion that the ac­cused with two oth­ers, now at large, on same date, at­tacked him.

He said the ac­cused dis­pos­sessed him of his Ba­jaj mo­tor­cy­cle val­ued at N85,000 with­out his con­sent. When the charges were read to the ac­cused, he pleaded guilty and was sen­tenced to thir­teen months im­pris­on­ment by the Mag­is­trate, Mo­hammed Kutigi, with­out an op­tion of fine.

The court also or­dered him to pay a com­pen­sa­tion fee of N85,000, fail­ure of which would at­tract another twelve months jail term. Po­lice in Kubwa have dragged a 25-year-old busi­ness­man be­fore an Abuja mag­is­trate court for al­legedly re­ceiv­ing the sum of $350,000 sus­pected to be stolen. Sun­day Olu­mo­fun of Phase 2, Site 2, was charged to court for re­ceiv­ing stolen prop­erty.

The po­lice pros­e­cu­tor, Oyeyemi told the court that the com­plainant, Joseph Ogun­dare of same ad­dress, on Septem­ber 12, re­ported at the Kubwa po­lice sta­tion of how the ac­cused, on the pre­vi­ous day, re­ceived the sum of $350,000 from one In­no­cent Lukas of the same ad­dress.

He said the money was re­cov­ered from the ac­cused dur­ing po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tion. When the charges were read to the ac­cused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N10, 000 by the Mag­is­trate, Mo­hammed Kutigi, with two sureties who must be res­i­dent within the court’s ju­ris­dic­tion. The case was ad­journed to Novem­ber 2, for hear­ing Sim­i­larly, a 20-year-old busi­ness­man was ar­raigned be­fore the same court over an al­leged N19,500 fraud.

Abubakar Sani of Kubwa vil­lage, was charged with cheat­ing, of­fense con­trary to sec­tion 322 of the Pe­nal Code. The po­lice pros­e­cu­tor, Oyeyemi told the court that one Isah Abubakar In­spec­tor of Byazhin across, on Septem­ber 22, re­ported at the Kubwa po­lice sta­tion of how the ac­cused, on Septem­ber 10, in false pre­tense, col­lected two gal­lons of tur­key oil and one gallon of Reg oil val­ued at N19,500 from him to sell.

He said the ac­cused in­ten­tion­ally con­verted the money to his use af­ter selling the oil, thereby caus­ing him wrong­ful loss. When the charge was read to the ac­cused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the Mag­is­trate, Mo­hammed Kutigi, on self-recog­ni­tion.
