Man,19,goestojailfor stealing motorcycle
A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 months imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate court for stealing a motorcycle in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Aminu Umar of Jaye, Abuja, was convicted for joint act and theft, offenses contrary to sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The police prosecutor Oyeyemi told the court that the complainant, one Babarabe Ishaku of Phase 2, Site 1, on September 20, reported at the Kubwa police station that the accused with two others, now at large, on same date, attacked him.
He said the accused dispossessed him of his Bajaj motorcycle valued at N85,000 without his consent. When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to thirteen months imprisonment by the Magistrate, Mohammed Kutigi, without an option of fine.
The court also ordered him to pay a compensation fee of N85,000, failure of which would attract another twelve months jail term. Police in Kubwa have dragged a 25-year-old businessman before an Abuja magistrate court for allegedly receiving the sum of $350,000 suspected to be stolen. Sunday Olumofun of Phase 2, Site 2, was charged to court for receiving stolen property.
The police prosecutor, Oyeyemi told the court that the complainant, Joseph Ogundare of same address, on September 12, reported at the Kubwa police station of how the accused, on the previous day, received the sum of $350,000 from one Innocent Lukas of the same address.
He said the money was recovered from the accused during police investigation. When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N10, 000 by the Magistrate, Mohammed Kutigi, with two sureties who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction. The case was adjourned to November 2, for hearing Similarly, a 20-year-old businessman was arraigned before the same court over an alleged N19,500 fraud.
Abubakar Sani of Kubwa village, was charged with cheating, offense contrary to section 322 of the Penal Code. The police prosecutor, Oyeyemi told the court that one Isah Abubakar Inspector of Byazhin across, on September 22, reported at the Kubwa police station of how the accused, on September 10, in false pretense, collected two gallons of turkey oil and one gallon of Reg oil valued at N19,500 from him to sell.
He said the accused intentionally converted the money to his use after selling the oil, thereby causing him wrongful loss. When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the Magistrate, Mohammed Kutigi, on self-recognition.
