Activities commemorating Nigeria’s 55th Independence anniversary were rounded up at the weekend at the IBB Golf and Country Club with the host beating their Ghanaian counterparts from the famous Achimota Country Club 1924 42-22.

The visiting team lost the double and single matches played in Abuja at the weekend.

IBB Club took the Saturday double matches 17 ½-5 ½ before wrapping up the contest in the singles held on Sunday 25-17.

It will be recalled that Ghana and Nigeria are known for playing golf matches to celebrate their Independence days and the latest visit by the Ghanaians was Achimota’s first return to Nigeria’s capital since 2013.

Interestingly, Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah who is the Competition Secretary of Achimota, said IBB Golf Club would be invited during the re-commissioning of Achimota on October 25-26.

He also said the Ghanaian delegation was happy with the hospitality extended to them by their host just as he expressed confidence that it will go a long way in making the ties between the two nations stronger.

“It was my first time in Nigeria, but there was no disappointment from what I saw. The friendship has been sustained. And to show commitment to the ties we will be inviting IBB to Accra for the reopening of our world-class golf course later this month,’’ he said.

On his part, the captain of IBB Golf Club, Captain Hamid Abbo said the objectives of staging the contest were fully achieved.

Meanwhile, gifts were exchanged between both teams just as Sulaiman Mohammed emerged winner of the stand out raffle of a flight ticket from Abuja to Dubai.
