NEWS 100,000 nomads migrate from Niger over cattle rustling - Miyetti Allah

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

Over 100,000 nomads in Niger State have migrated to neighbouring countries due to cattle rustling, Daily Trust gathered yesterday.

The acting chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Adamu Kaduna Tsauni, disclosed this in an interactive session with newsmen in Gwada village of Munya Local Government Area of the state.

He said incessant raiding of nomads’ settlements by rustlers who dispossessed them of their only means of livelihood was responsible for the mass exodus across the shores of Nigeria.

He said many herders were also killed by rustlers in Munya and Shiroro Local Government Areas of the state, forcing their members to seek safer abodes.

He said added to the problem of cattle rustling was the limited access to food by the animals as most grazing reserves had been taken away by state governments.

He also blamed the mass exodus of herders to neighbouring countries on the encroachment of cattle routes by farmers.

Tsauni therefore called on the federal government to intervene in the matter.

He also urged his members to always be law abiding, noting that they could only operate in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
