Buhari ob­tains na­tional iden­tity card

Pres­i­dent Muham­madu Buhari yesterday ob­tained his na­tional iden­tity card from the Na­tional Iden­tity Man­age­ment Com­mis­sion (NIMC).

The Di­rec­tor Gen­eral of the com­mis­sion, Chris Onye­me­nam, pre­sented the iden­tity card to the pres­i­dent at the State House in Abuja yesterday.

Af­ter re­ceiv­ing his iden­tity card, Buhari di­rected the com­mis­sion to har­monise and in­te­grate data ob­tained by other agen­cies, both gov­ern­men­tal and non­govern­men­tal.

Ad­dress­ing House cor­re­spon­dents later, Onye­me­nam­saidthecom­mis­sion was pro­cess­ing about 20 mil­lion data from the Bank Ver­i­fi­ca­tion Num­ber scheme.

He said the com­mis­sion had also col­lab­o­rated with the

State In­de­pen­dent Na­tional Elec­toral Com­mis­sion, the Na­tional Pen­sion Com­mis­sion, the Nige­ria Po­lice Force, the Nige­ria Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Com­mis­sion, the Fed­eral Road Safety Com­mis­sion and the Nige­ria Immigration Ser­vice.

He said Buhari was shown how the na­tional iden­ti­fi­ca­tion num­ber could be used to con­firm the iden­tity of an in­di­vid­ual even if the per­son was not present.
