Panel beater in court over al­leged theft

A panel beater, Bitrus Nyango, 22, on Wed­nes­day ap­peared be­fore a Jos Chief Mag­is­trate’s’ Court, charged with steal­ing two phones val­ued at N52,000.

Nyango, who re­sides at Ang­wan Mai Angwa in Zar­ma­ganda, Jos, is charged with crim­i­nal con­spir­acy and theft.

The Pros­e­cu­tor, Sgt. Thomas Amoku, told the court that one Gabriel Isaac of Rukuba Bar­racks, Jos, re­ported the mat­ter at the “A” Di­vi­sion Po­lice Sta­tion on Oct. 10.

Amoku said that while the com­plainant was at the Ter­mi­nus Mar­ket, the ac­cused per­son and two oth­ers, now at large, at­tacked him and dis­pos­sessed him of his phones, val­ued at N52, 000.

He said that the ac­cused was, how­ever, ar­rested by se­cu­rity men while he was try­ing to flee the scene.

The pros­e­cu­tor said that the of­fences con­tra­vened the pro­vi­sions of Sec­tions 317 and 288 of the Pe­nal Code.

If con­victed, the ac­cused is li­able to five years im­pris­on­ment or an op­tion of fine or both.

The ac­cused, how­ever, pleaded not guilty to the crime.

The Mag­is­trate, Mr Naan­lang Dashe, ad­mit­ted the ac­cused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with a surety in like sum.

Dashe said the sureties must re­side within the ju­ris­dic­tion of the court and sub­mit two re­cent pass­port pho­to­graphs and driver’s li­cence or na­tional iden­tity card to the court. NAN
