The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Bem Angwe has called on the United Nations (UN) to help stop the illegal importation of ammunitions into Nigeria.

Speaking when he received the deputy director, Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate of United Nations, (UN) Mr Weixiong Chen and his team at the commission’s headquarters over the weekend, he said the illegal importation of ammunitions and weapons into the country had empowered insurgents in carrying their dastardly acts.

According to him, the insurgents have sponsors who aided them with information, finance and weapons in carrying out their operations hence the need of the UN body to help in carrying out investigations to find out the sponsors of the insurgent groups.

The Deputy Director said the aim of the team’s visit to Nigeria amongst other troubled countries was to seek ways which they could assist in combating terrorism in these countries.
