Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Hope Abah, Makurdi

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has confirmed the receipt of N28 billion bailout fund from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) with a promise to commence disbursement to workers soon.

Ortom who made the disclosure at the weekend during a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, to unveil the blueprint of his administration said the state government received the money only a few days ago.

“We received bailout funds for payment of salary arrears at both the local government and state levels. We accessed N15.5 billion for payment of teachers and local government salary arrears and N12.5 for state government workers,” he said.

The governor however regretted that the much awaited funds may not be able to clear all salary arrears. He noted that despite the obvious challenge, his administration has proceeded to set up committees which involve all major stakeholders including union leaders, for the disbursement which will commence as soon as the modalities are completed.

Our correspondent reports that verification exercises are also currently being carried out at both the state and local government levels to ascertain the genuineness or otherwise of wage bills.
