Man, 28, bags 7 years for rap­ing girl, 9

An Ondo State Mag­is­trates’ Court in Owo yes­ter­day sen­tenced a 28year-old man, Ed­ward Odi­may­omi, to seven years in pri­son for rap­ing a nine year old girl.

Ed­ward raped the girl at the Abuja Camp in Ipele, a com­mu­nity in Owo LGA of the state in Septem­ber 2014.

He ini­tially pleaded not guilty to the charge but later urged the court to tem­per jus­tice with mercy. How­ever, the po­lice pros­e­cu­tor, Mr Edu Owolabi, told the court that the of­fence was pun­ish­able un­der the state laws.

He urged the court to fol­low the pro­vi­sions of the con­sti­tu­tion and other rel­e­vant laws to deal with Odi­may­omi.

In her rul­ing, the pre­sid­ing Mag­is­trate, Mrs An­jola Ayeni who said the pros­e­cu­tion had proven the case be­yond all rea­son­able doubts, said she was con­vinced that he com­mit­ted the of­fence and sen­tenced him to seven years in pri­son with hard labour.

She said the judg­ment was meant to serve as de­ter­rent to other dev­il­ish peo­ple.
