A man, Malam Hassan Chiromawa, yesterday went to the section of the Kano Abattoir where knives are sold and as if examining a knife before purchase, slit his own throat.

A witness who pleaded anonymity said he died on the spot.

“The man nearly cut his neck into two. He was examining the knife like a buyer. He took many people by surprise because nobody knew his intention. I am sure he observed the people around very well before the act. He spent some time examining the knife before killing himself,” he said.

Another witness who also pleaded anonymity said the man might have killed himself because he owed a huge debt for years.

Police spokesman, ASP Magaji Musa Majiya, said the man slit his own throat and died, adding, “Our men rushed him to hospital but doctors confirmed his death. We have arrested four people who were there when he committed suicide.”

He said investigation had begun to ascertain the motive behind the act, assuring that no stone would be left unturned.
