The Senate committee on Import Duty Waivers yesterday grilled top officials of the Stallion group over N44bn unpaid import duty.

The committee chaired by Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) said the company violated the quota system on rice importation.

“A total of N44bn unpaid import duty is being owed the country. There is no money, so we will ensure that no Kobo is left out of this amount,” he said.

He said 150,000 tons were allocated to the group but that the company went ahead to import 400,000 tons.

Answering questions from members of the committee, the Executive Director of Stallion group, Mr. Harpreet Singh said they imported the rice based on the approval of the Federal government.
