IBB Golf Club to host in­au­gu­ral West Africa Tour

The pres­ti­gious IBB In­ter­na­tional Golf and Coun­try Club will have the hon­our of be­ing the first to host the West Africa Golf Tour which is a brand new ini­tia­tive aimed at pro­mot­ing and de­vel­op­ing the game in the re­gion through in­ter­na­tion­ally ac­claimed tour­na­ments.

Fur­ther­more, the tour­na­ment which is slated for De­cem­ber is go­ing to be the first in­ter­na­tional golf tour in the sub-re­gion and will strive to be­come a world class spec­ta­cle that will tal­ents in the re­gion to test their strength among their con­tem­po­raries and also have a place on the world stage.

Daily Trust gath­ered that all tour­na­ments will be ex­ten­sively cov­ered by Su­pers­port, its of­fi­cial broad­cast part­ner, through the Blitz and Sports chan­nels, and broad­casted on na­tional tele­vi­sion sta­tions across the re­gion with the pur­pose of in­creas­ing aware­ness about the sport.

The West Africa Tour Pres­i­dent, Emeka Okatta said the Tour con­cept cli­maxed two years ago when he spon­sored the train­ing of Nige­rian play­ers in South Africa.

Af­ter the in­au­gu­ral in­vi­ta­tional tour­na­ment in De­cem­ber in Abuja, events will be staged monthly in dif­fer­ent Tour des­ti­na­tions in Nige­ria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon and Equa­to­rial Guinea, parad­ing the lead­ing play­ers and busi­ness golfers in Africa.

The tour­na­ment for­mat is stroke play, ac­com­mo­dat­ing a field not ex­ceed­ing 120 play­ers who will com­pete over 54/72 holes. Only the top 50 play­ers and ties will make the cut af­ter 36 holes.

The sched­ule will cli­max with the West Africa Golf Tour Cham­pi­onship fea­tur­ing only the top 50 play­ers on the West Africa Golf Tour who have amassed the most points play­ing in at least half of the of­fi­cial tour­na­ments. The West Africa Tour Cham­pi­onship has a prize purse of $100,000 (about N22m).
