IBB Golf Club to host inaugural West Africa Tour
The prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club will have the honour of being the first to host the West Africa Golf Tour which is a brand new initiative aimed at promoting and developing the game in the region through internationally acclaimed tournaments.
Furthermore, the tournament which is slated for December is going to be the first international golf tour in the sub-region and will strive to become a world class spectacle that will talents in the region to test their strength among their contemporaries and also have a place on the world stage.
Daily Trust gathered that all tournaments will be extensively covered by Supersport, its official broadcast partner, through the Blitz and Sports channels, and broadcasted on national television stations across the region with the purpose of increasing awareness about the sport.
The West Africa Tour President, Emeka Okatta said the Tour concept climaxed two years ago when he sponsored the training of Nigerian players in South Africa.
After the inaugural invitational tournament in December in Abuja, events will be staged monthly in different Tour destinations in Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, parading the leading players and business golfers in Africa.
The tournament format is stroke play, accommodating a field not exceeding 120 players who will compete over 54/72 holes. Only the top 50 players and ties will make the cut after 36 holes.
The schedule will climax with the West Africa Golf Tour Championship featuring only the top 50 players on the West Africa Golf Tour who have amassed the most points playing in at least half of the official tournaments. The West Africa Tour Championship has a prize purse of $100,000 (about N22m).
