2 killed, 19 injured in head-on collision at Gada-Biyu
Two persons lost their lives, while 19 others sustained various degrees of injuries in a head-on collision that involved two vehicles yesterday at Gada-Biyu village, along the AbujaLokoja Expressway.
A witness said the accident happened around 8:34 a.m. when an 18-seater commercial bus with registration number KMT 593 XC on top speed overtook another vehicle dangerously at a diversion and collided with an oncoming Fiat J5 bus without registration number.
He said another Honda Civic, also without registration number, which was coming on top speed from the Lokoja axis rammed into the two vehicles.
He said a front seat passenger inside the commuter Hiace bus died instantly, while the driver was trapped by the steering and later died few minutes after he was taken to the hospital by the rescue team of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at Abaji.
Our reporter who arrived the scene shortly after the accident, saw men of the FRSC struggling to remove the trapped bus driver.
Some residents of the area, who spoke with our reporter at the scene, blamed the incessant crashes along the road on the diversions by Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) handling the dualization of the Abuja-Lokoja highway, without indicating proper road warning signs for the diversions.
When contacted, the Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Moses Audu, confirmed the crash, saying a driver and one person lost their lives, while 19 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
He said the two corpses have been deposited at the Kwali General hospital morgue, while the injured victims were taken to Abaji General Hospital and St. Peters Catholic Hospital in the area.
In a similar incident, four persons were also injured in another auto crash that occurred on Thursday evening near Omoko village, along the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway.
A witness said the accident happened around 5:37p.m. when a Toyota Sienna with registration number XC 729 LKJ on top speed rammed into a pothole and summersaulted into the bush.
He said one of the tyres burst immediately after the driver hit a pothole, lost control of his steering before the vehicle summersaulted into the bush, adding that four persons, including the driver, were injured and taken to the hospital.
The Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, Moses Audu, also confirmed the accident, saying the four injured victims were taken to Abaji General Hospital for medical attention.
