Confusion as gunmen kill trader at Leleyi village
Residents of Leleyi community in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were in the early hours of Friday thrown into confusion after some yet-to-be identified gunmen invaded the village and shot dead an Igbo trader in the area.
A resident of the community, who preferred anonymity, disclosed this to our reporter on Saturday, saying that the incident happened around 2:12a.m. when residents of the area were asleep.
He said that the gunmen, whose vehicle number could not be identified, went straight to the house of the deceased, forcefully opened the door and shot at him before they fled without taking away anything from the house.
“It was even the sound of their gun shots that threw the entire environ into confusion. But immediately they opened fire on the man and killed him, they fled without taking anything from him,” he said.
The resident said the deceased, who came to reside at the village some years ago, operated a provision shop in the area, saying the village head later went to report the incident to the Chief of Pai and the divisional police headquarters at Kwali.
City News learnt that men of the Kwali divisional police headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, have deposited the corpse at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital morgue at Gwagwalada.
When contacted, Mohammed confirmed the incident, but declined to make further comments, saying the matter is before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the FCT.
Efforts by City News to get further comments from the FCT Police Commissioner, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, over the incident were not successful, as he did not pick several calls put across to his phone.
