Hospi­tal CMDs tasked on qual­ity HIV ser­vice de­liv­ery

Ex­perts have en­joined heads of fa­cil­i­ties, and chief med­i­cal di­rec­tors of hos­pi­tals to be ac­tively in­volved in the HIV/AIDs ser­vices in their hos­pi­tals in or­der to im­prove qual­ity of care.

They gave the ad­vice dur­ing the re­cent meet­ing of heads of ter­tiary and sec­ondary hos­pi­tals in Abuja or­ga­nized by the Univer­sity of Mary­land, Bal­ti­more’s Nige­rian Al­liance for Health Sys­tems Strength­en­ing (NAHSS) project in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Fed­eral Min­istry of Health, and the In­sti­tute of Hu­man Virol­ogy Nige­ria.

About 90 heads of ter­tiary and sec­ondary hos­pi­tals in the coun­try have been meet­ing in batches in Abuja and Cal­abar within the one week to strate­gize on im­prov­ing the qual­ity of HIV care and treat­ment ser­vices pro­vided for peo­ple liv­ing with the dis­ease.

Di­rec­tor of Epi­demi­ol­ogy and Preven­tion, Univer­sity of Mary­land School of Medicine, Pro­fes­sor Man Charu­rat, said with­out true lead­er­ship in a health fa­cil­ity, change can­not hap­pen, adding that both chief med­i­cal di­rec­tors, and head of fa­cil­i­ties are ex­pected to be part of that lead­er­ship in or­der to achieve good qual­ity pro­gramme.

Charu­rat, who is also work­ing with the min­istry of health in im­ple­ment­ing the Nige­ri­aqual said CMDs should also use data to work with the team in cre­at­ing an en­abling en­vi­ron­ment for change in qual­ity HIV care.

Nige­ri­aqual, an NAHSS project, is the na­tion­ally stan­dard­ized qual­ity man­age­ment pro­gram adopted by the Fed­eral Min­istry of Health.

Speak­ing on the ben­e­fit of lead­er­ship on qual­ity ser­vice de­liv­ery, Med­i­cal Di­rec­tor, Gen­eral Hospi­tal, Suleja, Dr Adebayo Ade­dokun, said they achieved im­prove­ment of clin­i­cal care in­di­ca­tors from a an av­er­age low score of 17% to 54%, among oth­ers.Na­tional co­or­di­na­tor , HIV/ AIDs pro­gramme, Fed­eral Min­istry of health, Dr Eve­lyn Ngige said the qual­ity im­prove­ment pro­gramme started in 2007 with sup­port from the State Depart­ment for Health, New York be­cause they re­alised the need to ef­fec­tively scale up HIV/AIDs ser­vices at the grass­roots be­cause most of our pop­u­la­tion re­side there and ac­cess care at the lower lev­els.

NAHSS Project Di­rec­tor, Mrs. Chi­nenye Ugoji said the en­gage­ment of lead­er­ship of hos­pi­tals and gov­ern­ment in de­liv­ery of high qual­ity pa­tient care and clinic pro­cesses is piv­otal to build­ing a sus­tain­able cul­ture of high stan­dards in Nige­ria’s health care sys­tem.
