Woman es­capes mob at­tack over fake N500 notes

Amid­dle-aged woman was mobbed af­ter she was caught try­ing to buy items with cur­rency be­lieved to be fake at Abaji mar­ket last Fri­day.

A wit­ness said the in­ci­dent hap­pened at about 4:47p.m .af­ter the woman was seen with N500 notes, to­tal­ing N60,000, try­ing to buy plates. The trader was said to have sus­pected the money to be fake.

The wit­ness said the woman de­nied that the N500 was fake, but the trader re­fused to col­lect it and the ar­gu­ment be­tween them drew the at­ten­tion of passersby.

"The woman bought a plate of N200 from the trader and gave him N500. I was also buy­ing a cup in the shop and be­fore I knew what was hap­pen­ing people have gath­ered at the shop. The crowd ex­am­ined the N500 note and said it was fake. They now searched the woman’s purse and discovered N60,000 all in N500 de­nom­i­na­tions, which were also sus­pected to be fake,” she said.

She said af­ter the dis­cov­ery, the woman tried to es­cape but the crowd caught her and beat her up. She, how­ever, said that the woman was able to es­cape be­fore she was lynched.

When con­tacted, the Abaji Di­vi­sional Po­lice Of­fi­cer (DPO) CSP David Kolo, said he was not aware of the in­ci­dent, as nobody came to re­port such in­ci­dent at the po­lice sta­tion.

"In fact, I am just hear­ing about this in­ci­dent from you, as nobody came to re­port the mat­ter, but I will send my men to the mar­ket to find out, "he said.
