A pregnant woman has been arraigned before an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for alleged criminal torture of an eightyear-old child under her care.

Patience Michael, a resident of Dape II village, was arraigned under sections 238n and 246 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor, Zira Douglas, told the court that the accused person used a hot knife to inflict injuries on an eight-year-old child whom she accused of witchcraft.

The prosecutor said: “The crime was deliberately carried out by the accused person to cause the victim unnecessary suffering.’’

Douglas added that during police investigation, the accused confessed to the crime, claiming that the victim was a member of a secret cult who allegedly inserted a stone into her two year old child’s stomach.

The accused, however, denied the charges when they were read to her in court and was released on bail in the sum of N200, 000 with a surety who must be on Grade Level 12 in the public service while the case was adjourned to August 16, 2016, for hearing.
