Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Nabob Ogbonna, Abakaliki

The Ebonyi State Chief Judge, Justice Alloy Nwankwo, has pronounced five years imprisonment with option of N2, 000 fine against any person caught in the practice of female circumcision.

Justice Nwankwo who made this declaration at the official flag-off campaign against female genital mutilation organized by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Racheal Umahi, said the intention was to assist in ending the practice.

He condemned the act and called parents to change or face the wrath of the law as the judiciary would partner with the office of Mrs. Umahi to curb female circumcision in the state.

Speaking also on the occasion which was held at the Women Development Centre (WDC), Abakaliki, Mrs Umahi described female genital mutilation as a harmful traditional practice against womanhood which must end.
