SON strengthens fight on substandard tyres, building rods
The standards Organization of Nigeria, SON, has moved to further standardise all products manufactured in Nigeria with factory-specific manufacturers’ identity codes on all products made in Nigeria, beginning with vehicle tyres and building rods.
The Director-General, SON, Dr. Paul Angya, made this known last week while addressing press men in Abuja. He said SON had decided to deepen the manufacturing standards in the country in order to save the country further avoidable loss of lives and properties, and also meet up with international best practices. Speaking further the acting DG said with this factory-specific identity codes we will be able to trace all fake and substandard products to their manufacturers, noting that all persons and shops selling products without their correct identity codes will be prosecuted.
He also announced that his agency is collaborating efforts with the Federal road safety commission FRSC to ensure the success of the tyre standardisation programme. “While we regret the loss of lives due to the use of fake and substandard products we also urge Nigerians to be careful and vigilant for the safety of their lives and properties, by ensuring that they buy only duly certified products.
The agency has so far standardised over 5000 products in Nigeria and in the last two months we have closed down over 1000 shops nationwide where we found fake and sub standards products”.
