Mob sets ablaze sus­pected rob­ber in Warri

A 21 year-old rob­bery sus­pect iden­ti­fied sim­ply as Ese was yes­ter­day set ablaze by an an­gry mob at Isoko quar­ters in Warri South Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Area of Delta State.

The de­ceased who was al­leged to be a mem­ber of a five-man rob­bery gang ter­ror­is­ing the area, was was said to be a bus con­duc­tor.

He was al­leged to have snatched a com­mer­cial bus be­long­ing to a po­lice of­fi­cer in En­er­hen road in Warri but was mobbed af­ter he was sighted at a bus stop yes­ter­day.

Ac­cord­ing to wit­nesses, the irate mob hit him with hard ob­jects be­fore set­ting him ablaze. Over five sus­pects had been killed in the past two months in Warri and its en­vi­rons through jun­gle jus­tice. The Chair­man, Vig­i­lante group, Warri chap­ter, Mr Mau­rice Oliseh, con­demned the act, say­ing jun­gle jus­tice should be dis­cour­aged.

Oliseh said rob­bery sus­pects should be handed over to the po­lice for prose­cu­tion. The state Po­lice Public Re­la­tions Of­fi­cer (PPRO), DSP, Ce­lestina Kalu had warned res­i­dents against tak­ing law into their hands. Seven per­sons among the an­gry mob who lynched the sus­pect have been ap­pre­hended by the po­lice. (NAN)
